Weather Enter Welcome

Spring

The weather has gotten somewhat warmer, though not it rains almost constantly, a dreary drizzling, usually accompanied by a thick mist that hangs over the city. On a few, very rare occasions, there will be sun, but this does little to lighten the moods of anyone living in town because they all know it will just start to rain again later. Nights are very cold, but the constant precipitation keeps the pollen count fairly low, leading to a reduced risk of allergies. Sleeping outside would be a bad idea, however, since you'd be quite likely to get sick.

Somehow, somewhere, scientists managed to combine human and animal DNA. Somehow, they created hybrids of various species. Somehow, some of these escaped. They ran away from their creators because many of them were intended for pleasure, treated as less than the animals they came from, despite their heightened intelligence. Many of these did not know where to go and wandered, seeking kindness from strangers that saw them as freaks, as the scientists' mistakes. Some found homes, but many were left on the streets, selling themselves for food, sleeping with strangers because it meant shelter for just one more night.

But there was a place for them. This place was so full of crime and corruption that these new creatures didn't bother anyone any, so more and more of these hybrids came. A few scientists moved there to continue their experiments, hiring themselves out as people paid them for their creations. It wasn't the best life, but at least it gave them a chance. Prostitution and dancing in the local clubs were the two main professions, though that wasn't all that the city had to offer. People, for the most part, got along, despite the violence, and this worked fine. Some weren't as tolerant as others, but they were ignored, mostly. The laws were mostly unwritten, since there were almost no police that cared about anything but getting paid; everyone took care of themselves and maybe the ones that they cared about. That was just how things were in Duskwood.

Welcome to Guilty Pleasures, a roleplaying site dedicated to magical creatures that live in a modern-day city, where the police aren’t interested in much that doesn’t benefit them and almost every business owner is more than a little shady. Creatures that should never be allowed on the streets cause everyone to stay inside at night, but the town in general is a fun, exciting place to live. Wouldn’t you like to see just how fun it can be?

[ ]Adopt-a-character! (3 sub-boards)
Here players who are too creative or too productive for their own good can make characters for people to adopt and play as. Also, players who are very nice or bored of typing everything out can adopt characters. It's very useful if a player has a certain idea for a storyline that (s)he wants to act out.

Duskwood
[ ]Club Moonshine (1 sub-board)
Music can be heard pulsating around this building for blocks and there are always neon lights lit up on the outside. Inside, it would be found to be quite dark, with colored lights in the ceiling moving patterns around on the floor. A large stage is positioned in the center of the room, curving around to provide space for the dancers. A bar is stationed off to the side, where creatures are almost always sitting around and talking, some to sneak off together later. Bathrooms are stationed not too far away from the bar, though any further view is impaired by a wall, though a thick, black curtain can be found in one shadowy corner, a doorway of sorts into the back rooms.

[ ]Duskwood High School (7 sub-boards)
The building looked nice from the outside, with a garden for students to walk in and a small patch of trees so that they could pretend to be helping the environment, though the truth was that, from within, the school screamed asylum. There were teachers whose minds were, quite possibly, farther down the gutter than those of the teenage students, as well as the fact that they were expected to stay in the school all day and learn whatever their teachers told them to. And most of that was only going to get them into trouble. Many students here were drug users, though they never got caught because the teachers just didn’t care… It was all about the teachers in this school and the students were an unavoidable nuisance for them to put up with.

[ ]Fairview Library
Books, books, and more books! This library is a safe place for adults and children alike to come, sit down, and read. Or just take out a book to bring home with them, whichever works. With books of many kinds, it is a favorite spot for those that actually care about knowledge, as well as those who like the 'smarter type'. Whatever the reason, anyone is permitted here, but remember: shirts and shoes required!

[ ]Streets (1 sub-board)
Lamps shed their cold, hard light over the pavement and cement, giving the already deserted-feeling streets an even more unnerving appeal. Music can be heard coming from various clubs and bars, its pulse that which kept the city alive. Occasional patrol car could be seen passing by, but often these were police looking for a good time and nothing to worry about if what you were doing was illegal. Alleys and such can be seen running off from the streets, with nearly every alley dark. Apartments line the streets, though stores and clubs eventually replace these, while larger houses later replace the clubs. Nobody should be caught alone on these, regardless of gender. There are many more creatures of the night and many could do some serious harm, were they to catch you.

[ ]The Harbor
The ports of Duskwood lie on the southern portion of the Empress River, just above the delta that lets out to the sea. They used to be a vibrant center of trade and intellectual commerce. But, over the many years, they have degraded to the cloacae of the Empress River. A place where all waste and refuse comes and goes. The only things that can survive in the toxic waters are the vermin and filth that frequent them. The streets that lead to the port are lined with decrepit buildings, the signs of vibrance, now fading in the brick and glass. The ports themselves stretch out into the toxic river, the scent of bile and death filing the thick air. During the daytime, the port is nearly empty, only a few barges shipping in food and clean water. However, night at the waterfront is dangerous indeed. Smugglers loading in their… wares on the harbor, murderers dumping barrel after barrel of dead bodies to rot on the riverbed, dealers standing like statues with their coats open, displaying the vials, balloons, bags and stamps that seem so important to the trembling skeletons that wander the streets of the city. If you're going to the harbor, it's best to bring some protection.

[ ]Apartments (6 sub-boards)
Old apartments line the streets for the majority of the city, tapering off only as there are fewer and fewer stores around. These, unlike some living space, have not become more valuable with age and have, in fact, become disgusting rat-infested homes for those with very little income. Drug users and prostitutes frequent the boarded-up apartments that are seen far too frequently along the dimly lit streets. Often there are problems with mold and unevolved rodents, though there is the occasional well-furnished, nice looking apartment.

[ ]Cheery Cherries Housing Development (4 sub-boards)
At first glance, it is painfully clear that this is where the big dogs play. Large, extravagantly decorated houses line the carefully-tended streets for as far as the eye can see, with lush, green lawns and well cared-for gardens. Bright flowers, houses that seem to almost sparkle with the money that must have been spent on them, and rich neighbors, this would seem to be the area for those that the less fortunate would dub ‘rich snobs’ or some other such slander. Though it should be judged on a case-to-case basis, as there are some dangerous people around this development, even if its name does reflect the general... enthusiasm of the residents.

Duskwood Community College
[ ]Quad
Three dull, nearly crumbling buildings stand amongst the rest of the brick and concrete blocks. The trio stand around a field of dying yellow grass, lush with weeds and cigarette butts from neglect. The community college isn't the best school, but it's easy and close if, for some reason, a student can't part from the crack-using, crouched skeletons that wander through the streets. It's usually used as a safety school, despite the fact that it isn't very safe. The three buildings are the dorms and student center, the general classroom building and the Cirillio Corleone School of Business.

The quad is an expanse of grass and weeds that stretch between the buildings. The grass is yellow where it stands, though it it non-existent in the majority of field. Students usually come here to drop, pop, fill, spill, smoke, toke, shoot and drink whatever substances they use to pass the time of what little life they have. There is still some movement, though. Prostitutes run along to the teachers and students rooms to... offer their services and a few people still play football or ultimate Frisbee on the plain.

[ ]Student Center and Dormitory
Four stories of glass and breaking brick make up the housing for the students that decide to attend. The first story is the student center, where simple metal folding chairs crowd around small Formica tables, old or stolen laptops give their indifferent glow as students busily try to look busy. Mostly they just browse for tail and narcotics as they sit in front of the screens. There are a handful of portable cameras lined up against the wall next to a few racks of school clothing and empty video cassettes. Art supplies lay in a disorganized heap on shelves that sprawl throughout the partitioned section of the center. A few registers sit on counters that corner between the whining, understocked refrigerators that vend their wares. This is the media center and the school store. A very rarely visited part as most people prefer to ignore this area and just focus on showing up to class, rather than getting the best grades. The desk near the door is the registrar's office and behind that is a small room where the dean conducts what little business he finishes. The floors above make the dorms. Co-ed, of course.

[ ]General Hall (1 sub-board)
The general hall is just that, a hall where general studies take place. Film. Art. Drama. History. Sciences. Math. Languages. All rooms that wind throughout the six story complex. The building is covered in tan brick that is falling apart, chunks of it just falling on the sidewalks around it. The halls are filled with vending machines installed by mobsters to make a buck. The floors are dirtied, cut linoleum lit by fluorescent lamps that charge through the halls, lighting what few bodies seem to float through the corridors.

[ ]Cirillo Corleone School of Business
The school of business is the nicest looking building in the school. It stands on eight large pillars that hoist it above the street, making it seem greater than the other dying structures. It was founded by a influential mobster, one who wanted to keep his son close to him when he went off to school, so he went and raised the funds necessary for the school. Usually, the only students that attend are mobsters' children with the exception being the few legitimate kids that are trying to get a degree.
